Humanscale takes a new approach to sitting. Rather than relying on mechanical adjustments to contour the chair to one's own body, ones own body does the contouring for you. Designed by Niels Diffrient, these chairs are made to accommodate the natural movements of the body as it works and as it rests. The recline is weight-sensitive and the foam backrest is molded to match the contours of the human body. The result is a chair that sits and moves with you, taking ergonomics to the next level!
Who’s Niels Diffrient?
Niels Diffrient was called the "granddaddy of the ergonomic revolution" by Forbes.com. Though Diffrient passed in 2013, his influence lives on in the many fields in which he applied his design skills. While he won numerous industry awards and worked on countless projects ranging from the interiors of airplanes to tractor seats, his greatest contribution was to ergonomic chairs, which still carry the stamp of his influence to this day!
How do these chairs work?
The key is in the self-adjusting recline. As you sit, your body naturally moves, whether it be a little or a lot. Rather than thinking of sitting as a static activity, HumanScale envisions it as dynamic and ever changing. The chair is designed to move with your movements and, as a result, cradles you lovingly throughout your day. The result is unmatched comfort no matter how you sit! This feature is provided by both breathable mesh backs or through solid backs.
Can the chairs be assembled without the arm rests?
No, the armrests are a part of the design. Unlike make chairs, the armrests are actually connected to the back rather than to the seat.
What’s the advantage of having arm rests connected to the back of the chair?
The back of the chair is designed to move with the movements of the chair's occupant, so by attaching the arms to the back of the chair you end up with arms that move with you as well. This way you get arm support when you need it!
Is it possible to replace the gas cylinder on these seats?
Yes! Rather than spend money on a brand new chair that you have to break in all over again, just order a replacement cylinder from the manufacturer. Replacing the cylinder solves the problem of a seat that sinks, and it barely takes any time, effort, tools, or know-how to do! You’ll get instructions with your order, and if that’s not enough there are plenty of illustrated and video tutorials online. While you wait for your replacement cylinder to arrive, use some duct tape or PVC piping to keep your chair at your favorite height.
Will these chairs damage my floors?
No, they won’t leave any marks on hardwood, laminate, stone, pill carpeting, etc. If you’re still worried, though, order a carpet chair mat! Just make sure you don’t confuse a chair mat for the Active Ergo Anti-Fatigue Mat, which is a mat designed to reduce pressure on your joints and feet while you stand.
